The 52-year-old actress, who is not only a star but an executive producer of the series, recently criticized the way in which the long-running ABC drama has historically tackled current social issues. “I think if I had any desire, honestly, it would be to be less sort of preachy in one episode about certain things,” Pompeo admitted on the latest episode of her podcast “Tell Me”, according to Deadline. “It’s like we do one episode about let’s see…Asian hate crimes is one that we did this past season that was really moving,” she recalled. “I think I’d like to see things happen a little more subtly and over time. You know, consistently and less sort of hit you over the head for just one hour and then we never talk about it again.” “I wish we could touch on these social issues that are important and have them be threads throughout,” she added. The actress’ comments come in the wake of the announcement that she will be limiting her presence in the upcoming season of Grey’s in order to pursue other projects, including her starring role in an untitled limited series for Hulu. Pompeo—who has starred as Meredith Grey since the show’s premiere in 2005—will maintain her role as an executive producer and a narrator of the show, but will only appear in eight episodes of Season 19–a drastic decrease from her presence in the show’s past.
