When can I start filing taxes for 2021?
The IRS announced that they will begin accepting 2021 tax returns the week of Jan. 24, 2022. “The Jan. 24 start date for individual tax return filers allows the IRS time to perform programming and testing that is critical to ensuring IRS systems run smoothly,” the IRS said in a statement. “Updated programming helps ensure that eligible people can claim the proper amount of the Child Tax Credit after comparing their 2021 advance credits and claim any remaining stimulus money as a Recovery Rebate Credit when they file their 2021 tax return.”
Is the IRS doing paper returns?
While the IRS will accept paper tax returns for 2021 taxes, they warn that because of COVID-19, e-filing will be easier and more efficient for everyone involved. “The pandemic continues to create challenges, but the IRS reminds people there are important steps they can take to help ensure their tax return and refund don’t face processing delays,” IRS Commissioner Chuck Rettig said in a statement. “Filing electronically with direct deposit and avoiding a paper tax return is more important than ever this year. And we urge extra attention to those who received an Economic Impact Payment or an advance Child Tax Credit last year. People should make sure they report the correct amount on their tax return to avoid delays.”
How long is the IRS taking to process paper filed returns?
The IRS estimates that if you file a “complete and accurate paper tax return,” you can expect your refund in about six to eight weeks from the date they receive it. If you file electronically, you’ll likely get your refund in less than three weeks (and even less time than that if you choose to get your refund by direct deposit).
How can I track the status of my 2021 tax return?
You can use the IRS’ “Where’s My Refund?” tool to check the status of your 2021 tax return after filing.
How can I speak to someone from the IRS?
You can call the IRS from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time, Monday through Friday, at 800-829-1040 for individuals. Hearing-impaired individuals can call the IRS at 800-829-4059. You should be prepared with your Social Security number and birthdate (and/or that of anyone filing jointly with you), your filing status (i.e., single/individual, married/joint, married/filing separately, etc.), a prior year’s tax return, the tax return you’re calling about (whether it’s current or prior), and any mail you’ve received from the IRS. The IRS can only handle certain topics by phone, with some areas, including depreciation, capital gains and losses, education, health care, trusts, and specific forms being excluded from phone correspondence. See the full list here of topics that the IRS cannot address by phone. Rettig warned, “Our phone volumes continue to remain at record-setting levels. We urge people to check IRS.gov and establish an online account to help them access information more quickly. We have invested in developing new online capacities to make this a quick and easy way for taxpayers to get the information they need.”
Does IRS have free filing?
You can file your taxes for free online with the IRS Free File program. You can start on Jan. 14, 2022, and the IRS will hold the return for you and begin processing on Jan. 24, 2022. Free File is just for federal taxes, not state taxes. Next, check out these hilarious Tax Day memes.
