It’s hard to resist the temptation when a chocolate craving strikes, but the calories can quickly add up if this becomes a habit. How healthy is this crunch bar alternative? We spoke to several nutritionists to find out. Here’s everything you need to know.

Why Nutritionists Recommend this Candy Alternative

Nutritionists do indeed love this candy alternative, and here’s why:

1. It has simple ingredients

This crunch bar recipe that’s become popular on TikTok is a much better option than what’s available on shelves, says Dan Gallagher, ISSA Certified Nutritionist at Aegle Nutrition. It uses three ingredients: Coconut oil, quinoa, and chocolate, so you’re looking at far fewer preservatives and sneaky additives.  “Quinoa is packed with nutrients, and coconut oil provides healthy fats and is great for your skin and hair. However, I wouldn’t necessarily call this ‘healthy’—it’s still a treat that should be eaten in moderation alongside a balanced diet,” Gallagher adds.

2 It includes plant-based protein and fiber

Not only are the ingredients healthier, but the protein and fiber make it a more satiating snack. “Using quinoa in replacement of white rice adds both plant-based protein and fiber, which will make for a more filling snack with less impact on blood sugar levels. If you choose to use dark chocolate with 70% cacao or above, it will reduce added sugar and provide more of the healthy antioxidants found in dark chocolate,” Erin Palinski-Wade, RD, CDE, LDN, CPT, Nutrition Consultant, explains.

3. It does’t have added sugar and fat

“When made according to the original recipe this makes a relatively healthy alternative to the traditional candy bar,” says Lisa Richards, nutritionist and author of the Candida Diet. “The quinoa and dark chocolate used are both nutrient dense ingredients that have zero added sugar or fat added.” However, the recipe loses much of its benefits when milk chocolate is used in place of dark chocolate, which the creator states can be done. This raises the calories and fat of the bars along with added sugar. It is best to stick to the original recipe for a healthy chocolate bar when cravings strike, Richards adds.

4. It’s nutrient-dense

Quinoa offers a complete source of protein, meaning it contains all essential amino acids for anabolic growth, Rachel Fine, registered dietitian, and owner of To The Pointe Nutrition, explains. Overall, you’re boosting the nutrient density of the snack in a way that supports your body’s overall needs.  However, there is one caveat to take into consideration. “My argument is that it’s not really comparable to the real deal crunch bar. Oftentimes, when we look for healthy alternatives, we’re left feeling a bit unsatisfied. This sets us vulnerable for an all-or-nothing mindset that can lead to binges down the road,” Fine explains. So, while this is an awesome option for a quinoa-chocolate snack bar, it doesn’t have to replace the real deal if you don’t want it to.
