Things looked bad for 30-year-old Jimmie Herrod from Portland, Oregon when he took the stage and revealed to Simon Cowell that the song he was going to audition with was “Tomorrow” from Annie. “Are you serious?” Simon said. “That is my worst song in the world. You are going to sing that? You should do another song.” But Jimmie, who teaches music online to kids, didn’t have another song prepared, so he had to take the risk and hope that the other three judges—Sofia Vergara, Heidi Klum and Howie Mandel—were going to appreciate his performance and give him a “yes.” It only takes three yeses to move on to the next round. When push came to shove, though, Jimmie’s voice was so incredible that he not only won over Sofia, Heidi and Howie, but he made a convert out of Simon. “Wow, wow, wow!” Simon said. “It’s not my worst song anymore. Unbelievable.” But Sofia begged to differ, “I had to say I didn’t like it that much,” she said, stunning the audience and her fellow judges. But then she said, “I loved it. That was so amazing. I feel like I had to [push the Golden Buzzer]. You deserve it.” Jimmie will move directly to the live shows, joining fellow Golden Buzzers: Howie’s Northwell Health Nurse Choir, Simon’s Nightbirde and host Terry Crews’s World Takekwondo Demonstration Team. When asked why he auditioned for AGT, Jimmie said because he thought it was the perfect time. “When opportunity presents itself, you run toward it, and so, I am excited to share what I have to offer,” he added.
