“My parents are high-profile political figures,” Claudia introduced herself. “My mother is Kellyanne Conway. She worked for Donald Trump. And my dad is George Conway. He’s a lawyer and he worked against Donald Trump. He’s here with me. It’s a lot, but I agree to disagree with my mom and my dad. It’s tough but I only want to spread love and I love a compromise. ” The one thing that Claudia made clear to the judges is she wants to make a name for herself apart from her parents, and she is hoping to do that through music, which has been her saving grace when life gets tough. “I had to move to Washington, D.C., when I was 12 and I hated it,” Claudia explained. “When your mom is working for the President of the United States, who you very much disagree with, it’s hard.” But there is love there. “She loves me. I love her. Our relationship is a little iffy. Most of my life, my feelings had been suppressed, so then I got social media and was like, ‘Well, yeah. Now my voice is being heard,’" Claudia told the judges. Before she performed, Kellyanne spoke to her daughter in Idol’s new immersive experience room, which features a giant screen. “You should be nervous, it’s a humbling experience,” Kellyanne told her. “This is your time to shine. Remember, winners are people who are willing to lose.”

Claudia began her audition with “Love on the Brain” by Rihanna, but nerves got the best of her, so Katy stopped her and asked if she had prepared a second song. She had. Adele’s “When We Were Done.” So, Katy gave her a little coaching, “Think about when you were young and go back to that time. There’s a sadness there. You lost your youth because you weren’t able to experience it on your own without all of this noise. Your dad’s your dad; your mom’s your mom. Who is Claudia? You have to calm the storm around you because if you sing like you want to read the social media comments afterwards, you are only going to be a Tik Tok star. We want an American Idol.” Claudia responded well to the coaching and got through the second song. “You obviously have been through a lot as a young girl and you have been in the spotlight,” Luke Bryan told her. “You are singing like a 16-year-old girl, which is great. With that Adele song, when you started, you were selling emotions really, really well, but then there are some things that you are limited by your range.” Lionel Richie, too, thought that the second song was better, saying, “You showed where you could take coaching, understood that the fear factor left you for a moment, and the qualities of your voice came through, and I was really impressed. Is it going to be a challenge for the rest of the contestants we have on the show? I don’t know.” But it is Katy who seems to understand Claudia the best. “There’s a lot of noise in your life,” Katy said. “You have to calm the storm that is around you. Before you sing, you have to get off your phone, you need to stop reading your comments and push it aside, because if not, you may never rise above your dad or your mom. It’s your choice.” Luke said no, but Katy got behind Claudia, and so did Lionel, who told her he was going to give her a shot at music. So, with two out of three judges, Claudia is on to Hollywood.
