With the new season premiering July 23 with episodes dropping weekly, there’s no shortage of heart and laughter in the new season. There’s even a heartwarming Christmas episode that might make Hallmark Channel envious. I had the opportunity to preview the new season of Ted Lasso and I can definitively say in my best Ted Lasso voice, “It’s like a cinnamon bun warm out of the oven—sweet, filling and totally satisfying.”

Who is Ted Lasso?

The series follows Ted Lasso (Jason Sudeikis), a college football coach who takes a job in London as the coach of a professional soccer team even though he has no prior experience or any actual knowledge of the sport. “It’s as much about soccer as Rocky is about boxing,” says Sudeikis of the show. https://twitter.com/TedLasso

Is Ted Lasso based on previous material?

Yes! Ted Lasso was a character created back in 2014 for NBC’s promos of their coverage of Premier League soccer in the U.S. The character was created by Jason Sudeikis, Brendan Hunt and Joe Kelley. The promos sat on a shelf for awhile before Bill Lawrence, creator of Scrubs, came on to help further develop the characters and story into a television show. Fun fact:Arlo White plays himself in Ted Lasso. White is the lead broadcaster NBC Sports’ live coverage of the Premier League in the United States.

When did Ted Lasso season 1 premiere?

Season 1 of Ted Lasso premiered on August 14, 2020 when Apple TV dropped the first three episodes. The remaining seven episodes premiered weekly on Fridays.

Where is Ted Lasso filmed?

It’s no surprise that a fish-out-of-water story about an American heading across the pond to coach a British football team would indeed be filmed in and around London. Much of the series is filmed at West London Studios, but cast and crew do go out on location to quite a few iconic locations. In season 1, we see the real-world town of Richmond, the home of Hayes and Yeading FC, Cricketers Pub, Selhurst Park and more. For season 2, we’ll see more locations around London. In March 2021, Jason Sudeikis and Hannah Waddingham were spotted filming outside a pub in London, and in the season 2 trailer, we see Wembley Stadium.

What happened in season 1 of Ted Lasso?

The first season of Ted Lasso saw Coach Lasso acclimating to life across the pond. Bringing his unique approach to coaching as well as his American colloquialisms, Lasso and his cohort, Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt), brought the players together to work with each other instead of against one another including the always-ornery and aging player Roy Kent (Brett Goldstein) and self-absorbed phenom Jamie Tartt (Phil Dunster). Lasso charms the team’s owner, Rebecca (Hannah Waddingham), whose original intent of hiring Lasso was so that the team would gloriously fail and go up in flames—all to get back at her ex-husband and former owner, Rupert (Anthony Stewart Head). As she spends more time around Lasso and realizes this man really only has the purest and best intentions at hand, she starts to cave. Of course, the freshly made cookies he makes for her every day doesn’t hurt. The team tries to avoid relegation (essentially, being sent down to the minors), but is unable to hold on to their place in the Premier League. This sets up the second season where their goal is to play their best so they are promoted back into the league.

What do we know about season 2 of Ted Lasso?

In a new, two-minute trailer shared June 15 we get a deeper look into the future, or lack thereof, of AFC Richmond. But no matter how uncertain their future, Jason Sudeikis remains the sunniest soccer coach even! He’s back in season 2 with an alter ego named Led Tasso, whose coaching are even stranger than Ted Lasso’s. Watch the new trailer now!

When will season 2 of Ted Lasso premiere?

Production of season 2 recently wrapped in London. Season 2 of Ted Lasso will premiere on Friday, July 21 on Apple TV.

Has Ted Lasso won any awards?

Ted Lasso has won several awards including Golden Globe, Critic’s Choice and SAG Best Actor in a Comedy Series awards for Sudeikis, Critic’s Choice award for Best Actress for Hannah Waddingham and Writer’s Guild of America awards for Best New Series and Best Comedy Series.

Who’s in the cast of Ted Lasso?

Jason Sudeikis (Ted Lasso)

Sudeikis got his start in comedy doing improv in Chicago including Second City before getting hired on as a writer for Saturday Night Live in 2003. He became a cast member for SNL in 2005. Fun fact: George Wendt, who played Norm on Cheers, is Jason’s uncle.

Hannah Waddingham (Rebecca Welton)

Before hitting the screen, Hannah Waddingham got her start in theater including playing the Lady of the Lake in the West End production of Spamalot. Prior to Ted Lasso, Waddingham played Septa Unella in Game of Thrones and as Jax-Ur on SYFY’s Krypton. Fun fact: Her mother and maternal grandparents were opera singers!

Brendan Hunt (Coach Beard)

It’s unclear if Beard is the coach’s first name, last name or nickname, but the coach is Lasso’s steadfast sidekick and an assistant coach who knows more about soccer than his boss does. For a decade, Hunt was a writer and performer with the Boom Chicago troupe which was based out of Amsterdam. It was in Amsterdam that he and Sudeikis spent hours playing FIFA soccer video games which later served as inspiration for Ted Lasso. Hunt has appeared in commercials for GEICO, Skittles and Volkswagen. Fun fact: The actress who plays Jane, Beard’s girlfriend, is Phoebe Walsh, one of the writers on the show.

Brett Goldstein (Roy Kent)

Brett Goldstein is a writer on the show and was not even considered for the part of Roy Kent. “I knew there was no chance anyone was thinking of me for Roy.” On the last day of the writer’s room, Goldstein secretly made an audition tape and sent it to the producers with the comment, “Look, if this is embarrassing, we can pretend you never got this email, and we can never talk about it again.” He created AMC’s Soulmates with Black Mirror writer Will Bridges. Fun fact:Goldstein hosts a podcast called “Films To Be Buried With,” which features guests talking about films that have made an impact on their lives.

Nick Mohammed (Nathan Shelley)

Nick Mohammed almost didn’t go into acting. The British-born actor played violin in university and got a degree in geophysics before going on to Cambridge for his doctorate in seismology. He even had a job lined up with an oil company. His interest in comedy caused him to audition for the Footlights (think England’s version of the Groundlings) and got in. After he performed at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, he was contacted by a producer and the rest, they say, is history. Fun fact:Mohammed created and stars in Intelligence, a British comedy series starring Friends’David Schwimmer about an NSA agent who is sent to London to act as a liaison to the UK’s Government Communications Headquarters.

Juno Temple (Keeley Jones)

Juno Temple got her start as a child actress and has since been featured in films like Atonement, The Other Boleyn Girl, and Year One. She auditioned for the role of Luna Lovegood in the Harry Potter movies but lost out to Evanna Lynch.

Jeremy Swift (Leslie Higgins)

Jeremy Swift is best known for his role as Mr. Spratt, the butler to Maggie Smith’s Lady Crawley on Downton Abbey. Swift’s other credits include Mary Poppins Returns, The Durrells and Foyle’s War. He is also a composer. Fun fact:The actress who plays Higgins’ wife on Ted Lasso is Swift’s real-life wife.

Phil Dunster (Jamie Tartt)

Jamie Tartt is the cocky striker for AFC Richmond who thinks far more of himself than anyone else does. On loan from Manchester, his arrogance is something Lasso tries to kill with kindness. Dunster was previously on Humans with Crazy Rich Asians’ Gemma Chan.

Cristo Fernandez (Dani Rojas)

Cristo Fernandez was a professional soccer player before his career was sidelined with knee injuries. Acting then took center stage. Fernandez went to the Guildford School of Acting at the University of Surrey (where Jeremy Swift also studied) for his master’s degree. The Mexican native hails from Guadalajara.

Anthony Stewart Head (Rupert Mannion)

Outside of Sudeikis, Anthony Stewart Head is probably the most recognizable actor in the cast. Head plays the former owner of the Richmond team and ex-husband of Rebecca’s. U.S. fans will recognize Head from his role as Rupert Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. He was also famously in the series of Taster’s Choice commercials in the ’80s. Fun fact:Anthony Stewart Head is the brother of Murray Head, also a singer/actor whose single, “One Night in Bangkok” topped the charts in the mid-80s.

Toheeb Jimoh (Sam Obisanya)

Toheeb Jimoh just graduated from drama school back in 2018 but not only landed his role as Sam Obisanya on Ted Lasso, but also the titular role of Anthony Walker in the BBC docudrama, Anthony.

Sarah Niles (Dr. Sharon Fieldstone)

Niles joins the cast as the team therapist. She has mainly performed in theatre but has been featured in Catastrophe and I May Destroy You.
