This week it was announced that a significant portion of Trebek’s Jeopardy! suits and wardrobe were donated to The Doe Fund. The organization offers housing, vocational training, paid work, continuing education and social services to Americans with histories of homelessness, addiction and incarceration. The suits will be worn on job interviews. “What I really appreciate about The Doe Fund is that it gives people an opportunity for a new beginning. There are so many ways you can help someone get back on their feet, and who of us hasn’t needed a second chance?,” said Alex’s son Matthew in a statement. Matthew Trebek owns several restaurants in Harlem, New York and has worked closely with The Doe Fund in the past when he ran a soup kitchen in the neighborhood. “Having a suit gives a person a certain sense of belonging and can uplift their attitude in general,” he added on the radio show As It Happens. The donation includes 14 suits, 58 dress shirts, 300 neckties, 25 polo shirts, 14 sweaters, 9 sports coats, 9 pairs of dress shoes, 15 belts, 2 parkas and 3 pairs of dress slacks. The clothes will be distributed to those in Ready, Willing and Able, The Doe Fund’s reentry program. Jeopardy! tweeted photos of Matthew Trebek packing the clothes with the show’s costumer, Steven Zimbelman. “I sincerely appreciate my son, Matthew, and his great idea to donate his Dad’s suits to @thedoefund. I had never heard about this amazing organization until Matt brought it to my attention… it truly is so wonderful,” wrote Jean Trebek on Instagram. “It warms my heart to know that Alex’s suits will be donated to such an important cause.” Trebek who, as Matthew shared on As It Happens, wore jeans and tattered T-shirts around the house until they “physically could not be worn anymore,” says that he imagines the donation would make his dad happy. “I think he would feel really good about it,” said Matthew Trebek on the radio show. “This would be something that was right up his alley.” Next, See the Full List of Jeopardy!
