Ava DuVernay’s long-running family dramedy on OWN: The Oprah Winfrey Network follows the complex lives of the three Bordelon siblings—Ralph Angel (Kofi Siriboe), Nova (Rutina Wesley) and Charley (Dawn-Lyen Gardner)—and their extended family, a bonded bunch who make their homes in rural Louisiana (specifically, in the fictional community of St. Josephine Parish). Although Season 6 (which was greenlighted even before Season 5 aired) will dive into the realities of the COVID-19 pandemic, there will still be much to celebrate with homecomings and reunions, plus quite a bit of drama and angst to capture and keep our attention. Ready to take it all in? Here’s everything we know about Season 6 of QueenSugar on OWN.
What happens in QueenSugar Season 6?
Season 6 promises to be jam-packed, but all will not be sweetness and light. According to Essence, “The new season of the show aims to tie together some of the loose ends left during the previous season’s finale earlier this year.” Meanwhile, Queen Sugar director Lisa France told TVFanatic.com back in July 2021 that the action will have “a little bit of a jump” time-wise between the end of Season 5 and the start of Season 6. France also teased some major bombshells when she told the outlet, “I don’t think we’ve ever seen anything like it, ever, what we’re going to see this year. [It’s] pretty crazy stuff… it’s pretty bananas. What happens with our family, and all of the family actually dealing with all kinds of… again just kind of dealing with legal things. That’s all I can say.” She also hinted at storylines that deal with the plight of Black farmers in America. “It’s what black folks face with their own land in the South that they’ve been facing forever. I mean, look at what’s going on with farmers right now in this country. We went from 100 million black farmers to 1 million black farmers,” she explained. “We’re gonna talk about it. We try really hard to stay with the current time and what’s going on. So you’ll see some of that in this season.”
When does QueenSugar come back?

What happened in Season 5 of Queen Sugar?
DuVernay wound up rewriting the bulk of Season 5’s 10 episodes to reflect the difficult and unfolding events across the nation back in 2020 and early 2021—including the spread of COVID-19, the death of George Floyd, widespread police violence and its aftereffects on Black America and the nation as a whole. But much to the delight of the show’s numerous fans, Season 5 ended with the Bordelon siblings and their extended family all in an optimistic place. “I really loved the intimacy of those scenes. I feel like they were such a true reflection of what so many of us found ourselves doing, which was having such deep conversations that maybe would never have happened had it not been for the pandemic with those closest to us in our worlds and in our homes," Dawn-Lyen Gardner, who plays Charley Bordelon West on the series, told Deadline. “It was a conversation that Ava wanted to explore… it deepened and broadened and reflected back this larger social conversation that we all needed to have.”
Is there a trailer for Season 6 of Queen Sugar?
Yes, and it gives us a lot to look forward to. The Season 6 trailer reveals that there’s both angst and happy times ahead while focusing on how the Bordelon family is getting back on its collective feet after the COVID-19 pandemic. According to Oprahdaily.com, the trailer reveals “motivational toasts, reunions, homecomings, pregnancies, and more…Charley and Davis are seen sneaking around together—clearly not wanting anyone to find out about their reunion. Nova’s eyes sparkle at Dominic, a new addition to season 4. Blue returns from boarding school to Aunt Vi’s delight.” Ralph Angel, and Darla, despite celebrating the impending birth of their first baby, are worried about their finances—which could lead them to lose their farm, and thus their livelihood. As a result, according to TV Line, it leads to “Ralph Angel entertaining a life of crime to prevent that loss.” In other updates, “Charley and Davis have reunited in some fashion, but she’s also keeping their reunion a secret from Aunt Vi and wearing large hats to hide her identity.” TV Line also notes that the trailer features “Aunt Vi and Charley… giving stank-face expressions to their nemesis Parker. Meanwhile, Micah seems to be suffering from a fugue state of sorts or PTSD while away at college… and family friend and local farmer Prosper Denton (Henry G. Sanders), whose altercation with police landed him in the hospital and prompted his daughter Billie (Tammy Townsend) to return home for the first time in 20 years.”
