Apple previously teased the new iOS in a press release this past June, and now, three months later, the tech giant unveiled the release date for the highly-anticipated iOS 16. During the Sept. 7 Apple Event, officials announced that the updated version of its operating system would be available on Sept. 12–to coincide with the release of its new iPhone. Among the significant modifications is one major enhancement to the messages app: an edit, unsend, and delete button. With the free update, iPhone users can make up to five edits to a message within the first 15 minutes of sending it and undo a sent message for up to two minutes after they first pressed send. To do so, hold down on the message and choose from the prompted selection. The new iOS messaging features are only available for iMessage, not SMS texts or third-party messaging apps (like WhatsApp). The choice to undo a message and delete a message differ in that deleting a message will only remove it from the sender’s messages, whereas enabling the feature to undo send will permanently discard the message from both the recipient and the sender’s chat history. It’s not entirely infallible, though, as the person could potentially still see the message in their notification center before actually opening it in the app or before the sender retrieved the message. Apple will also betray users who unsend or edit messages by providing the recipient with a log of tracked edits made to the original message or notification that a message has been unsent. Also reported to come with the release of iOS 16 is the ability to better utilize widgets and custom fonts for personalized lock screens, increased accessibility and security settings, improved search system and iCloud sharing, and whole lot more.
