“I don’t think we can ignore the reality of the pandemic, especially as health care professionals in New York City at a large public hospital,” showrunner David Schulner told TV Insider. “Just like everyone else’s plans and lives and storylines were interrupted by this pandemic, I think New Amsterdam is no exception and we all have to recalibrate for it.” Here is everything we know so far about New Amsterdam Season 3.

Who is leaving New Amsterdam for Season 3?
Dr. Floyd Reynolds (Jocko Sims) said goodbye to New Amsterdam to move to San Francisco with his fiancée Evie (Margot Bingham) at the end of Season 2. But the question that was left unanswered when New Amsterdam had to wrap its season early is if he is gone for good. That won’t be revealed until the show returns, but if this Instagram is any indication, it looks like he will be back in some capacity.
Will there be any new characters in New Amsterdam Season 3?
According to Schulner, the addition of Daniel Dae Kimlast season as the very smug Dr. Cassian Shin, the new head trauma surgeon, is it for now. Kim was brought on for five episodes, and his character, as introduced, couldn’t be more different than Max. “That’s one of the reasons we love the character and what Daniel Dae Kim did with him because he has no interest in changing,” Schulner told TVInsider. “What he does works for him. How he works, works for him. He didn’t come to New Amsterdam to save everyone. He came to New Amsterdam to save trauma victims. And if he is off being quixotic like Max is, he won’t be able to do his job.”
Are there any New Amsterdam Season 3 spoilers?
Several story arcs had been under way in Season 2 when it was forced to wrap early. It looked as if something was happening between Karen Brantley (Debra Monk), chair of the board of directors at New Amsterdam Medical Center, and Kapoor; Iggy was working on the possibility of adopting another kid; and Bloom and her mother were making strides to heal their relationship. Whether any of that will now be picked up in Season 3 remains to be seen. “In Season 3 we have to rethink everything,” Schulner told TV Guide. “Their priorities are going to change after this pandemic. I don’t think we can force storylines on a new world we’re living in—it would ring false. They’re going to change.”

Yes! In the trailer, it is revealed that things are finally turning around at the hospital, but Dr. Kapoor’s health is in jeopardy.
What was originally supposed to happen in the New Amsterdam Season 2 finale?
Schulner shared with TVInsider that he was going to add climate change to the story. He wanted to add a hurricane story. “The original plan was to shoot it in Puerto Rico before the earthquakes happened, then when [they] happened, we moved to the Dominican Republic for our finale and we did a big scout there. It was going to be a really exciting, action-packed episode about how these islands are ill-equipped to handle the amount and power of hurricanes because of global warming.”
Will New Amsterdam Season 3 address the coronavirus pandemic?
When COVID-19 hit, New Amsterdam had already planned to do a pandemic episode, just one where the crisis was influenza, but the idea was ditched when the real pandemic hit. “I don’t think we can ignore the reality of the pandemic,” Schulner told TV Insider. Then, in an interview with NBC’s Chicago affiliate station, Eggold also addressed the issue of COVID storylines, saying, “I think that the show has always come from a place of hope. I think [we ’ll be] focusing on obviously the patients but also the health care workers and the effort that it has been and continues to be. I think we will begin in a place of reflecting on what the crazy journey that we’ve all kind of been through has been like.”
What happened in the New Amsterdam Season 2 finale?
In the “A Matter of Seconds” episode that turned out to be the Season 2 finale, patients were developing life-threatening symptoms. Helen and Bloom figured out that the problem was the auto-injectors, which contained too much morphine. Bloom, who was struggling after rehab, confirmed the diagnosis by tasting it, which could lead to complications in Season 3. Max spent the episode trying to get his muscular dystrophy patient Liam into a life-extending medical trial, and then he ended his rebound relationship with Alice because he was tired of pretending that he was ready to move on from his wife’s death when he wasn’t. Iggy had to weigh in on whether or not a gun owner was mentally stable enough to own the legal firearm he had purchased and pointed at his wife. Helen and Shin struck up their own relationship, but whether it is just a friendship or a romantic relationship will be revealed in Season 3.
