And just when we thought more was on the way, NBC has scrapped plans for a new series in the franchise, Law & Order: For the Defense. The new series would have differed from all previous series in the franchise because it would have been presenting the opposite side of law and order, telling stories from the defendant’s point of view. Originally planned as part of an all-Law & Order Thursday lineup alongside Law & Order: SVU and Law & Order: Organized Crime, the third spot will be filled by The Blacklist, which will shift from Fridays to the Thursdays for its ninth season. “This new show is exciting for me personally,” franchise creator Dick Wolf said when the straight-to-series order was announced in early May. “We spent the last 30 years on shows that played offense. Now it will be great to play defense and being able to do it with Carol [Mendelsohn] is an honor and an opportunity for both of us to do television that hasn’t been done before.”
When does Law & Order: For the Defense premiere?
Law & Order: For the Defense was ordered straight to series, meaning no pilot was made. So while the series will be part of the NBC 2021-2022 schedule, it remains to be seen if it will be a fall release or will be saved for the midseason lineup, which is what happened for Law & Order: Organized Crime. Of course, Law & Order: Organized Crime was also affected by COVID-19 production shutdowns.
