“You get to see the impact that these so-called jokes are having on a human woman,” Murphy recently told Marie Claire about how her Kevin character deals with being the butt of so many punchlines. “These sitcoms have shrouded misogyny and racism and bigotry and sexism under laugh tracks.” In other words, Murphy’s role is definitely not “a little bit Alexis,” to borrow the title of her Schitt’sCreek’s character’s viral theme song. “She’s a very angry, very frustrated character, as opposed to Alexis’s bright, cheerful character,” Murphy explains. “So it checked all the boxes for what I was looking for.” If a smart and surprising dramedy with an empowered woman at its center is what you’re looking for, keep reading to find out everything you need to know about Kevin Can F— Himself.
What is Kevin Can F— Himself about?
Allison (Murphy) is a working-class woman from the greater Boston area and a stereotypically put-upon sitcom wife—so stereotypical, in fact, that when we see the long-suffering Allison interacting with her tactless, selfish schlub of a husband, Kevin (Eric Petersen), and his buffoonish friends and family, the show looks, feels and sounds like a multi-cam sitcom, complete with a canned laugh track (which is pretty necessary, considering the “jokes” are almost purposefully unfunny). Like so many sitcom wives before her, Allison dutifully plays her gendered role, making breakfast for her sports-obsessed husband and bringing him beers while perpetually carrying a laundry basket around their dingy digs. However, whenever Kevin’s not around—because Allison is at the liquor store where she works, or just because she’s just left to her own thoughts—she can’t help dreaming of a better, classier life and believing she deserves more. A nice, roach-free house in a desirable neighborhood seems to be at the top of her fantasy list. She also runs into an old pal, Sam (RaymondLee), who’s returned home to open an upscale diner; he might play into some other Annie fantasies later on. During those moments when Allison confronts her grim, hopeless reality, Kevin Can F— Himself abruptly changes into a dark drama (think BreakingBad), with the same locales presented in a gritty, single-camera style. Allison even repeatedly fantasizes about offing her not-so-better half.
