So maybe it’s precisely because he’s known for being so darn likable that the past year and change have been an emotional rollercoaster for him—starting in December 2020, when Mulaney went to rehab for cocaine and alcohol abuse. He’s always been open about his past addiction issues, but up until that point, fans hadn’t known he’d relapsed during the COVID-19 pandemic—although he did sort-of seem a little off when he suddenly took a staff job at longtime friend Seth Meyers’ LateNight show and went on to deliver a handful of odd on-camera appearances. As Mulaney explained about his latest career turn on Jimmy Kimmel Live! (less than three weeks before news broke that he was going into rehab), “I wanted to have a boss and I wanted to have structure. Because my psychiatrist, who knows me well, said, ‘Without external structure, I don’t have confidence in you thriving.’” That would have been enough to deal with, but in May 2021, there was more news: Mulaney was divorcing his wife of over six years and she was heartbroken. Twitter exploded with opinions and commentary. But no one was prepared for what came next. Three days after the divorce announcement, eyebrows were raised when news broke that Mulaney was dating actress Olivia Munn. Then, just a few months after that, Mulaney—who’d previously said he never wanted children—announced in September 2021 that he and Munn were about to have a baby together. (Twitter went nuts all over again.) Just a few weeks after that, rumors started swirling online that Mulaney and Munn and already called it quits before their child had even arrived. (Twitter went nuts all over again again.) That adorable baby, a boy named Malcolm Hiệp Mulaney, finally arrived at the very end of 2021. If you were unaware of all this, but now feel oddly concerned about everyone involved, keep reading to find out all about John Mulaney’s romantic past and present, including his ex-wife, his rumored new girlfriend and his future as a father.
Who is John Mulaney’s wife?
Anna Marie Tendler, 36, comes from a Jewish background and was born in Connecticut. She is, according to her website, “a multidisciplinary artist working in photography, textiles, drawing, painting and interior design. She holds an M.A. in fashion and textile history from NYU’s Costume Studies program… She likes to think of her life as an ever-evolving art piece.” And that’s just the beginning. Tendler was also an early and successful makeup blogger; she did a “Food and Fashion” series on her blog with Aziz Ansari and has delivered makeup tutorials for Amy Poehler’s Smart Girls, an organization aimed at “helping young people cultivate their authentic selves.” She studied hairstyling at Vidal Sassoon and has done makeup for Broadway and TV (and, of course, a few of her husband’s shows). Tendler has also written hair and makeup-related books, including Pin It!: 20 Fabulous Bobby Pin Hairstyles and The Daily Face: 25 Makeup Looks for Day, Night, and Everything In Between! She even taught herself to make lampshades and now owns Silk Parlor, crafting Victorian lampshades by hand. If you’re not impressed yet, she also has a bachelor’s degree from The New School in writing and psychology—and a French bulldog named Petunia that seemingly has its own Instagram account, although the account hasn’t been active for well over two years.
When did John Mulaney get married?
Tendler apparently knew she was going to marry Mulaney soon after they met on Martha’s Vineyard in Massachusetts. In 2018, Mulaney posted on a now-deleted anniversary message on Instagram that revealed she’d foretold their union. “Happy 4th anniversary @amtendler. And happy 8 year and 5 month anniversary to when you predicted it. Every time I see you it feels like when Leo saw Claire Danes through the aquarium [in the film Romeo & Juliet].” In 2013, Mulaney revealed that he almost proposed to Tendler on a beach “crawling with homeless people," but apparently changed his mind when Tendler pointed out that “there are other beaches in Malibu." Mulaney remembers that “it was so tense, and then when I proposed it was really worth it.” Mulaney and Tendler got married at the Onteora Mountain House in New York’s Catskills region on July 5, 2014. Their friend, comedianDan Levy (no, not that Dan Levy) officiated the ceremony, which Bill Hader, Seth Meyers and other comedians and friends attended. Tendler wore a Jenny Packham gown and Petunia the French bulldog was there, of course. Tendler made all the floral crowns for the bridal party. Mulaney marked the day by writing in a since-deleted social media post, “On a beautiful and perfect day, I married a beautiful and perfect woman. I wish I could live it over and over again.” Of course, he put Tendler in his material over the years. In 2018, Mulaney mentioned his wife in his show Kid Gorgeous at Radio City during a joke about Nazis: “These New Nazis [say] ‘Jews are the worst, Jews ruin everything and Jews try to take over your life.’ It’s like, well you know what… My wife is Jewish. I know all that, how do you know all that?’” (He followed up that joke by telling the audience, “I’m allowed to make fun of my wife, I asked her, and she said yes.”) He went on to praise Tendler by hilariously declaring, “I would never say that, not even ask a joke, that my wife is a bh and I don’t like her. That is not true. My wife is a bh and I like her so much. She’s a dynamite, five-foot Jewish b***h and she’s the best… She’s my hero.” The couple were married more than six years when a Mulaney rep announced the comedian was going to rehab. He got out in February 2021, and then suddenly in May, the news broke that he and Tendler would be divorcing. However, Mulaney didn’t officially file for divorce until July. It seems the marriage deteriorated beyond repair during the COVID-19 pandemic. Mulaney stayed in New York City while Tendler went to work on a project in Washington, D.C. According to an anonymous Page Six source, Mulaney began drinking, doing drugs and “DM’ing women on Instagram for hookups—whether he went through with anything, we don’t know… This all followed a pattern—he and Anna Marie would break up and get back together again, he would get wasted and then he’d beg her to take him back.”
How is Anna Marie Tendler doing?
Many fans who are dismayed by the “Munnlaney” situation are still concerned about Tendler’s well-being, in part because she’s been very clear that Mulaney was the one who asked for the divorce. “I am heartbroken that John has decided to end our marriage,” Tendler said in a statement through a rep. “I wish him support and success as he continues his recovery.” Tendler has been somewhat public about how she’s handling things. She’s said that her recent art collection, “Rooms in the First House,” was inspired by “the often non-linear experiences of loss, anger, and powerlessness, as well as a reclamation of identity.” Most of the photos in the collection feature her, alone. There’s a picture of Tendler and Petunia, too (so it seems we know who is getting the dog in the divorce?). She was even clearer about her thoughts when she posted a picture of herself on Instagram with serious similarities to another Anne: Anne Boleyn. In the picture, she wears a pearl necklace almost exactly like the necklace Boleyn wore in the most famous portrait of her, with a gold T instead of Boleyn’s B. Tendler’s caption for the photo was “Moost Happi Anno 2021 (portrait at 36 years of age).” The other Anne, famously beheaded so that King Henry VIII could marry his next wife, had a portrait coin commissioned with “The Moost Happi Anno 1534” engraved on it during her pregnancy; she was meant to give birth to the male heir that year, which never happened. Some fans thought Tendler was taking a pointed (and sure, historical) jab at her ex and his new lady friend. Mulaney hasn’t commented on any of this. “John will not have any further comment as he continues to focus on his recovery and getting back to work," his rep said when announcing the split, and hasn’t said more.
Who is John Mulaney’s new girlfriend?
Munn, 41, is an actress and TV personality. She’s perhaps best known for her role as Psylocke in X-Men: Apocalypse or her role as Sloan Sabbith in HBO’s The Newsroom, but she’s also appeared in Iron Man 2, Magic Mike, Deliver Us from Evil, Mortdecaiand the fourth Predator film. She was a correspondent on The Daily Show with Jon Stewartfor a year, and hosted G4’s Attack of the Show! before that. Munn was born in Oklahoma; her mother was a Vietnamese refugee. She has two older sisters, plus an older brother and a younger brother. Unfortunately, her parents eventually divorced and Munn’s mom got mixed up with a man who Munn has called a “devil” because of his abusive behavior. “When my stepfather would be screaming his head off in the living room, I would hustle everybody into my room and launch into imitations of teachers or do scenes from movies,” she once recalled. “And that would take their minds off of the hell that was happening down the hall.” At the University of Oklahoma, Munn earned a bachelor’s degree in journalism, with a double minor in Japanese and dramatic arts, before heading out to Los Angeles. Like Tendler, Munn is a pet mom. She has two dogs, Frankie and Chance, and even partnered with Petco in an initiative to talk about pet mental health. She’s dated a number of celebrities, including Green Bay Packers quarterback Aaron Rodgers, actor Chris Pine and SNL star Will Forte. Some say Munn “munnifested” her relationship with Mulaney as early as December 21, 2020, after his rehab announcement. “Sending SO MUCH love and support to John Mulaney,” she tweeted soon after news of his latest addiction issues got out. “You got this.”
How did John Mulaney meet his new girlfriend?
As far as when “Munnlaney” became a couple, nobody’s sure of the exact timeline, although there are rumors that they recently met at a church in Los Angeles. However, they’ve seemingly known each other as casual acquaintances for years beforehand. In 2013, for example, Munn, Mulaney and Tendler were all in attendance at Meyers’ wedding to wife Alexi Ashe. In 2015, Munn told HuffPost Live that she saw Mulaney at a wedding (which fans later deduced was Meyers’ wedding) and was “obsessed” with the comedian. “I kept going up to him at the wedding like, ‘So, you having fun?’” she said. “I was just so obsessed with hanging out with and talking with him.” She even said she emailed him but never got a response. “I might’ve got the wrong email — probably. That’s what I tell myself.” In 2017, the pair crossed paths againin Jon Stewart’s HBO special Night of Too Many Stars, Mulaney walked offstage and Munn reportedly purred at him, “Hi, John.”
When did John Mulaney start dating Olivia Munn?
Just three days after the news about the impending divorce became public, Page Six and other outlets started talking about Mulaney and Munn. By the next month, in June, they were seen together publicly for the first time, eating and laughing at Rick’s Drive In & Out in Los Angeles.
Did John Mulaney and Olivia Munn break up?
On Oct. 23, 2021, a rumor hit Twitter that Mulaney and Munn had broken up. However, that bit of gossip came from some less-than-rock solid sources, including a dude on TikTok and an anonymous gossip account which posted, “I’ve heard recently from a fairly reliable source that this B-C list celebrity and her baby-daddy, A-list comedian have recently called it quits. Source is a friend who works in publicity, so make of that what you will, but she heard they’re not attempting to fake the relationship for the public, but won’t be announcing it either.” The more-reliable Us Weekly reported the same day that friends close “Munnlaney” believe their relationship is on rocky ground, but didn’t outright claim that they’d split. As one insider put it, “This has been an imperfect relationship from the start… Even though Olivia’s going to be a wonderful mother and has great support behind her, Olivia’s friends just don’t see these two being a couple in a year’s time.” As of Nov. 16, 2021, Munn seemed to confirm in an interview with The Los Angeles Times that she and Mulaney are still together, although her choice of words was still rather cryptic. “It’s definitely not foreign for me to have people speculate incorrectly about things and to have rumors run rampant in one way,” she said. “They think they know our relationship so well. When in reality, they don’t. There’s no way anyone could know what any of his relationships were or what our relationship is." It’s perhaps noteworthy that she referred to their relationship in the present tense; she also insisted that gossipers “ignore really specific public signs and actions that completely contradict the false narrative.”
Does John Mulaney have children?
No kids yet, but he’s about to have one! Munn is reportedly due to give birth in later 2021. Indeed, having kids is something Munn has thought about for a while. She even froze her eggs to make sure it would be more possible as she got older. “I did, years ago, freeze a bunch of eggs,” she told Anna Faris on the actress’ podcast all the way back in 2016. But while Munn was thinking about freezing her eggs, Mulaney was claiming he didn’t want children. In 2015, during his standup special The Comeback Kid, he mentioned a real estate agent who wanted him and Tendler to start a family, saying “you never know, sometimes you don’t know what’s going to happen, and you know, then something happens.” But, Mulaney told the audience at the time, “I didn’t mean to make it sound like we don’t want children. We don’t, but I didn’t mean to make it sound like that.” He was still against having kids in 2019. “I love what I do," he explained in an interview with Entertainment Weekly. “And I love my wife and spending so much time with her and we have a really fortunate life. I get to travel, do stand-up, and our relationship is so wonderful. It’s just something I wouldn’t want to change.” However, by Sept 7, it appeared that the real estate agent had the last laugh. He appeared on Late Night with Seth Meyers and told the public “I was nervous when I was about to say the news. … I’m gonna be a dad!” Mulaney was full of gratitude and hope that night. “You guys [my friends] saved me from drugs, and Olivia and this baby have helped save me from myself in this early journey out of recovery,” he told close friend Meyers. And Mulaney knows some people think the situation is strange, ok? In October during a standup routine, he reportedly joked, “You want to know how weird my life is? We announced we’re having a baby and the reviews were MIXED!” Still, the parents couldn’t be more in love with their little boy… as evidenced by the latest batch of adorable baby pics Mulaney posted with pride in January 2021.
