In fact, things were so dark that director Leon Vance (Rocky Carroll) showed up in Gibbs’ basement at the end to let him know that he wasn’t going to be able to save him. To which Gibbs, who still seems to have the bad attitude that got him in trouble in the first place, replied, “I know.” So, is this CBS’s way of bringing the series to an end? Let’s investigate

Is NCIS ending this year?

It’s a possibility. Earlier, a Hollywood Reporter story indicated that Harmon was ready to leave his role, and he was informed that if he left, CBS would cancel the show. Another possibility is Harmon could sign on for a limited number of episodes for a 19th season, meaning his team could carry on episodes without him. This is exactly what they did Tuesday night in the “Gut Punch” episode. With Gibbs out of commission, his team was removed from solving crimes and reassigned to being COVID compliance officers, which they saw as their punishment for lying to try to protect Gibbs. Of course, even though they have technically been benched, they solved the murder of the week–again, getting in trouble because it wasn’t their case–and saved the Secretary of Defense Moses McClaine’s (William Allen Young) life. The team did a great job, but the Harmon magic was missing from the episode, so it’s easy to see why CBS might cancel the show without him. There’s also speculation that Dawber’s four-arc episode appearance on NCIS is a sign that the series will conclude at the end of this season as she knows that this could be her last opportunity to act opposite her husband on his hit series. So, what led to Gibbs’ being suspended in the first place? It all began with a man who was killing dogs that were losers in the illegal dog fights he was holding. When Gibbs located him, he attacked the man and broke his nose, for which Gibbs got arrested. But later, when Vance asked Gibbs if he would apologize to the man, Gibbs told Vance that he was sorry for what happened, and added, “I regret I didn’t kill him.” Vance said, “What do you expect me to do with that?” That’s when Vance realized there was more going with Gibbs than usual and asked Gibbs for his gun and badge and suspended him indefinitely. NCIS has yet to be renewed for the 2021-2022 season, so while there is a great deal of speculation as to whether or not it is canceled, it’s too soon to call it either way. But, not only is NCIS the most-watched drama series on television, but it’s also the No. 1 drama in the world, meaning it makes a lot of money for the network. So CBS may go out of their way to accommodate its star and give him what he needs to return for Season 19. Next, get to know Mark Harmon’s wife Pam Dawber.
