Why can’t I download official Olympics emojis?
The answer is likely a simple one: Licensing. The Olympics logo is trademarked, Wired reports, as are the following words and phrases: “United States Olympic Committee,” “Olympic,” “Olympiad,” “Paralympic,” “Paralympiad,” “Pan-American,” “Citius Altius Fortius” (the Olympics’ three-word Latin motto: “Swifter, Higher, Stronger”), and “America Espirito Sport Fraternite” (the Pan American Games’ motto). That means if you get caught using any of those assets without permission, you can be penalized financially (or, as is often the case, formally instructed to knock it off with the knock-offs). You must obtain written consent from the International Olympics Committee to use the Olympics logo, and they don’t often grant it. In fact, several small businesses have previously been orderedto stop mentioning “Olympics” or using the rings logo in their work.
