“It’s a new take on it, a different time,” new cast member Emily Alyn Lind shared recently in an interview with Dazed. “It’s not a reboot, it’s a continuation, so we have an entirely new story and I think that’s really important.” According to Jordan Alexander, one of the show’s other new leads, the upcoming series is “staying true to the essence of Gossip Girl but with a completely different take on it.” So if you’re already getting nostalgic for original GG stars like tarring Blake Lively, Leighton Meester, Ed Westwick, Chace Crawford and Penn Badgley, don’t worry! Is there a trailer for the new Gossip Girl?

The first teaser for the new Gossip Girl confirmed that Kristen Bell would be back as the voice of the titular blogger. “She’s back and badder than ever,” HBO Max promised in the caption to that preview clip. “See you on the steps.” A full-length trailer has since debuted that gives a glimpse into the main storyline: Uptown Manhattan’s latest adolescent queen bee, Audrey (Lind) pulls a Regina George-in-Mean Girls by inviting a sweet-seeming new girl, Zola (Whitney Peak) to join their clique. In the interim, lots of making out ensues!

Who is in the new Gossip Girl cast?

Move over Serena and Blair, new private school teens have been spotted on the steps of the Met. The fabulous HBO Max cast includes Lind, Peak, Alexander, Evan Mock (Akeno “Aki” Menzies), Tavi Gevinson (Kate Keller), Thomas Doherty (Max Wolfe), Eli Brown (Otto “Obie” Bergmann IV), Zion Moreno (Luna La), and Savannah Smith (Monet de Haan). During a Twitter AMA, executive producer Joshua Safran—who also co-produced the original GG—revealed that the difference between the old and new Gossip Girl that he’s most proud of is “the majority of characters being diverse and/or queer.”

Will Blake Lively and Leighton Meester be in the Gossip Girl reboot?

Don’t expect a cameo from Serena. E! News reported in 2020 that Lively is “not taking part in the series in any way, shape or form.” As for Meester, nothing official’s been reported about her possible involvement, but during an E! News interview back in 2019, she made it sound like she’d hadn’t been contacted about a possible return.

Will anyone from the original Gossip Girl cast return?

So far, it’s just Bell as the narrator. “Kristen Bell has always been and will always be the voice of Gossip Girl,” producers said in a previous statement (via The Hollywood Reporter). The door has also been left open for the rest of the original cast. “We’ve reached out to all of them to let them know it was happening and we’d love for them to be involved if they want to be involved, but certainly didn’t want to make it contingent upon [them being involved],” executive producer Josh Schwartz said (via Entertainment Tonight). “They played these characters for six years, and if they felt like they were good with that, we want to respect that, but obviously…it would be great to see them again.” Meanwhile, Crawford has expressed interest in making a cameo in a reboot. “I would absolutely cameo,” he told Digital Spy in 2019. “I’d have to!”

When is the new Gossip Girl set?

The HBO Max Original series is set eight years after the original website went dark, which almost lines up perfectly with the real-world gap of time between the end of the original Gossip Girl’s run in December 2012 and now.

What will the new Gossip Girl be about and are there any spoilers?

A new generation of New York teenagers will be under the social surveillance of Gossip Girl, per the show’s logline (via Deadline). The series “will address just how much social media—and the landscape of New York itself—has changed in the intervening years.” Safran shared on Twitter that the upcoming series “is very, very queer.” The series will have “a lot of representation,” according to Peak. Lind told Dazed that Gossip Girl will also normalize “things that used to be different or taboo” and “gender roles will be talked about and dissected.” She added, “A lot of the women in our show are very powerful, but I think they were in the original as well. We’ll be exploring what it means to be a woman in this generation, and in general, exploring ideas that we didn’t before.”
