The third (and final) movie in the Netflix original romance trilogy (based on the book series of the same name written by Jenny Han) dropped today. In To All the Boys: Always and Forever, Peter and Lara Jean navigate their senior year of high school, attend prom, and graduate, all while figuring out what a post-high school life means for their relationship. After all, they got into different colleges and while Peter’s set on going to Stanford, Lara Jean considers school in New York. With the movies playing things pretty close to how things happen in the books, at least so far, there’s not much reason to believe they would all of a sudden stray away from the books come the final installment. And you know what that means! It means we can look at how the book series ends as a total spoiler for how the movie series ends, too. But be warned: The answers to these frequently asked questions contain major, major spoilers from the To All the Boys book series and by extension, might just contain spoilers to the third movie, too.
Do Peter and Lara Jean stay together?
At the end of the third book, Always & Forever Lara Jean, Peter and Lara Jean ultimately decide to stay together. But that romantic AF decision doesn’t come without its obstacles. There is, of course, a break-up and a misread sexual situation, but despite it all, the couple reunites at Lara Jean’s father’s wedding (he’s getting married to Trina, their next-door neighbor he met in P.S. I Still Love You) and decide that, despite the odds, they’re going to make it work.
Who does Lara Jean choose?
There is no love triangle in To All the Boys Always and Forever—unless you count Lara Jean, Peter, and an out-of-state-college as the third line in the triangle. The second movie (and book), P.S. I Still Love You, focused on a major love triangle between Lara Jean, Peter, and John Ambrose. Ultimately, Lara Jean chose Peter. The first movie (and book), To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before had more than just a love triangle—it had an, um, love octagon? All of the guys Lara Jean had written a love letter to were in play in some ways, including her sister’s boyfriend, and Peter was also still trying to make his ex-girlfriend Gen jealous (who just so happened to be Lara Jean’s ex-BFF, too). At the end of To All the Boys I’ve Loved Before, Peter chooses Lara Jean over Gen and Lara Jean chooses Peter over well, anyone else.
Does Peter stay with Lara?
Peter chooses to stay with Lara Jean at the end of the book series. Prior to making the decision to stay together, Lara Jean did not get into the same colleges as Peter. When she gets taken off the waitlist of a college in New York, she considers prioritizing her future over her current relationship, which puts a strain on her and Peter. On the other side of things, Peter is contemplating transferring schools to be with Lara Jean. During a beach house graduation party, Lara Jean decides it’s the night she’s going to have sex with Peter for the first time. The couple never goes through with it though because Peter stops things; he has a lot on his mind and now doesn’t feel like the right time. Soon after, Peter’s mom meets with Lara Jean and asks her to consider ending the relationship so that her son can have a freshman year without any drama. Yikes! Then, all hell breaks loose at Trina’s bachelorette party (who is marrying Lara Jean’s dad). It’s the first time Lara Jean ever gets drunk and she drunk-dials Peter and breaks up with him. When he asks if she only wanted to have sex with him for closure, she drunkenly says yes. The next morning, both Lara Jean and Peter are so hurt by what happened, they finalize the breakup. But things between them get repaired at Lara Jean’s father’s wedding to Trina. While they still don’t have concrete plans about college, they decide they want to be together and make it work. Lara Jean takes back what she says about the sex-for-closure thing and tells Peter that she genuinely loves him—that’s why she wanted to do it with him. And that’s pretty much where the books end. We never see them in college or find out what happens after the wedding.
Who does John Ambrose end up with?
Poor John Ambrose. Lara Jean immediately realizes she didn’t have feelings for him after kissing him at the formal in P.S. I Still Love You, the movie. After that, he kind of disappears from the series, and we know from the cast list that Jordan Fisher, who played Ambrose in the second movie, isn’t returning for the third either. However, if you read the books, you know that Han does give us a glimpse of where John Ambrose ends up. Near the end of the third book, Han mentions that John Ambrose is now dating a girl named Dipti, who he met in the Model UN.
Why didn’t Lara Jean pick John Ambrose?
It’s hard to say. Especially since Lara Jean’s reasoning for not picking John Ambrose differs in both the movie and book. In the movie, Lara Jean kisses John Ambrose at the Star Ball and both pull away from the kiss realizing she’s still in love with Peter. Lara Jean confesses to Stormy, “I wanted him to be someone else,” to which Stormy replies, “Sometimes you have to kiss the wrong man to know what’s right.” However, in the book, it’s more complicated than that. Lara Jean and John Ambrose attend a 1940s USO-themed party at the senior center together. They’re each other’s dates, dance together, and then clean up after the party together. But while leaving the party, Peter and Gen just so happen to be walking by and Lara Jean feels awkward about the interaction. In the book, they play a game called Assassins—which is not discussed in the movies at all. To avoid getting tagged by Gen as part of the game, Lara Jean flees with John Ambrose in his car. He kisses her at a red light. But she still feels for Peter. She ultimately tells John Ambrose that though she “could fall in love with [him] so easily,” Peter “got here first.”
Who does Lara Jean marry?
Lara Jean does not get married in the To All The Boys I’ve Loved Before book series, so we imagine she doesn’t get married in the movie version either. Her father, however, marries Trina and at their wedding, Lara Jean and Peter reunite and decide to stay together.
