But when Sgt. Hank Voight (Jason Beghe) totally broke protocol in the season 8 finale, it opened the door for some potentially great stories for season 9: Will the body he burned and buried be found and traced back to him? Will Upton crack and confess to shooting Roy? She hasn’t yet, but last week her partner and fiancé Halstead figured it out, and now he is angry at both Voight and Upton. “If you look at [the team] as family and Voight as the father – the responsible party – his family is unhappy and dangerously out of sync. It doesn’t feel like home anymore,” Beghe told TV Guide. Here’s everything we know about Chicago PD season 9 so far:

Are any characters leaving Chicago PD in season 9?
As of now, it looks as if the entire main cast will be returning, including Nicole Ari Parker as recurring character Deputy Superintendent Samantha Miller, who will be back despite the death of her son. Showrunner Rick Eid told Monsters & Critics, “I think she’s going to figure out what she wants to do and how. What happened to her son connects to this idea of policing and reform, but she’s not going to blame reform for her son’s death. I don’t think that it’s that simple. I think she ultimately believes that she did the right thing and just didn’t get the right result with her son. It’s a complicated issue. It’s not one plus one equals two here. I think that she did the right thing. It’s just interesting to put somebody who’s a proponent of reform in the face of reform, someone who’s a believer in reform, and put them in a really difficult situation to see if they walk the walk when it really matters. And I liked the fact that she did."
What happened at the end of Chicago PDseason 9?
Warning: This section containers spoilers about the Chicago PD season 9 finale. If you haven’t watch, stop reading now. Chicago PD wrapped up its eighth season with a two-part finale, which introduced the fact that Deputy Superintendent Samantha Miller had a son Darrell, who recently moved to Chicago after living with his father for years. Darrell had a $10,000 problem and he turned to Voight for help since it involved drugs. Darrell had been selling drugs on his college campus, but his clients were slow to pay and he owed the drug dealer $10,000. The way that Darrell explained it to Voight, the head of Intelligence thought they were dealing with a small-time dealer, but that turned out not to be the case. Voight told Darrell to back off, but Darrell didn’t listen in his need to make things right. So, he went to the club where the dealer was, and he stumbled on a sex trafficking ring. Darrell was a good kid at heart, and he tried to rescue one of the girls and got kidnapped and killed as a result. There was one point where Voight suspected where Darrell was being held, but he didn’t have what he needed to get a legal warrant, so Miller told him to stand down. Little did she suspect that it would cost her son his life, but it did. Darrell’s body was found the next morning. His death kicked the team into high gear to bring down the crime ring. While investigating, Kim Burgess was kidnapped and held hostage, but the goal of recovering her alive, splits the team into different camps as to how they should proceed. Ruzek, of course, lost it and would go to any means to get Burgess back, almost coming to blows with Atwater who not only wanted to go by the book but to hunt smart. Upton calmed Ruzek down by reminding him that if anything happened to Burgess, he was responsible for Makayla. So, she sent him to be with Burgess’ daughter. Burgess was shot by her abductor and played dead. She used a belt to slow the bleeding and then crawled out of the building in search of help. Meanwhile, Voight had the team split up—and he reverted to the old Voight. When he found someone, Roy, who could give him a lead, he cuffed him and beat him. Upton discovered him and convinced him to do the right thing. When the suspect was freed, he attacked Voight, forcing Upton to shoot him. But going by the book paid off for Halstead and Atwater. They tracked Burgess to her location and raced her to the hospital to get treatment. Upton turned to Halstead for comfort after the shooting and suggested they get married, which was a change of heart for her. And we close on Voight burning and burying Roy’s body to remove all trace. So much for following the rules.
Are there any spoilers for Chicago PD season 9?
One of the goals for season 8 was to really address the idea of police reform and it looked as if Voight was taking that seriously until the very final episode. So, season 9 will have to revisit that issue with him. How reformed is he really, or is he just giving it lip service for his team? With Upton’s declaration that she and Halstead should get married, this season will also need to explore what’s next for Upstead. Or once the shock of what happened with Voight and her having to kill someone passes, might she revert to her old feelings? Until it is revealed whether or not there is a time jump when we return, it is unclear what Burgess’ status will be. Will she be fully recovered from her gunshot wound, and even if she is, will she want to immediately return to duty, or will she be traumatized? In addition, Atwater will continue to struggle to find his way as the only Black cop in the unit. His unique perspective will continued to be explored. “He’s still growing as a person and as a cop, and he continues to see the world in a different way and continues to see his role as a police officer in a different light. It will definitely continue with him because that’s who he is,” Eid told Monsters & Critics.
