Is Nicole Kidman getting Oscar buzz for playing Lucille Ball?

Based on the big-name talent involved with the biopic, Being the Ricardos is the kind of movie that’s getting Oscar buzz before a frame is shot. However, reactions to the first footage on social media and elsewhere has been mixed at best. Observers have noted Kidman’s voiceover is more Kidman than Ball. Bardem doesn’t really look or sound anything like Arnaz in the available footage. However, the first teaser gives viewers very little to go on, so it’s possible we’ll still wind up blown away by the final result. At this time—and it’s early—Kristen Stewart is favored to win the Oscar for Best Actress for a jaw-dropping turn as Princess Diana in Spencer. Until Being the Ricardos screens for press, it’s tough to say if there’s another major challenger on the horizon.

The first film with an ensemble cast performed for a live audience, CBS’ sitcom ran from Oct. 1951 to May 1957, for a total of 180 half-hour episodes. Ball’s comic timing and expressions are iconic; she’s considered to be one of the greatest comedic talents in modern history. Also, whereas many TV shows from a few years ago feel dated now, I Love Lucy is still very funny. In a 2012 poll by ABC and People, I Love Lucy was named the best TV show in history.  I Love Lucy remains a quintessential American sitcom. If Being the Ricardos can live up to its legacy remains to be seen. What do you think of the first footage of Kidman as Ball? Sound off in the comments.
