The theme for the 2021 Met Gala, the most fashionable night of the year, is “American Independence,” a celebration of American fashion, which could mean lots of red, white and blue, and star-spangled couture. The theme was selected by Andrew Bolton, the Wendy Yu Curator in Charge of the Costume Institute, who told Vogue, “I really do believe that American fashion is undergoing a renaissance. I think young designers in particular are at the vanguard of discussions about diversity and inclusion, as well as sustainability and transparency, much more so than their European counterparts, maybe with the exception of the English designers.” This year’s Met Gala co-chairs are Timothée Chalamet, Billie Eilish, Naomi Osaka, and Amanda Gorman, who are all expected to make an appearance on the carpet. Who else will be walking remains a surprise. In addition, Tom Ford, Instagram’s Adam Mosseri, and Anna Wintour will also serve as the honorary chairs.
